L’Habitation La Favorite est l’une des deux distilleries situées sur la commune de Fort-de-France. Ouverte du lundi au vendredi (sauf jour férié) de 8h à 12h et de 13h30 à 16h. La visite et la dégustation sont gratuites.

 

Itinéraire

 

Rejoignez la voie rapide A1 de Fort-de-France puis prendre la sortie Dillon. Prenez à droite au premier feu et continuez tout droit (D13).  Vous allez rencontrer plusieurs rond points ou vous devrez allez toujours tout droit. Passez un dernier rond point et la route vous mènera naturellement vers ce croisement où il faudra tourner à gauche. Avancez au bout de la rue, jusqu’à la barrière et empruntez la route jusqu’à la distillerie.

 

 

 

 

 

Vous allez arriver sur un petit parking. L’environnement qui vous entoure n’est pas des plus beaux.

Habitation La Favorite

Vous pourrez faire une courte visite de la distillerie vous permettant d’observer la machine à vapeur ou les colonnes de distillation du haut d’un plancher ou de descendre par les escaliers afin de les observer de plus près. N’hésitez pas à lire les tablettes afin de comprendre les différents process qui amènent à la fabrication du rhum agricole. Voici quelques clichés de ce que vous aurez l’occasion de voir.

 

 

Un peu d’histoire…….

Au XIX ème siècle,  de nombreuses distilleries de rhum étaient principalement des habitations sucrières. Elles distillaient leur rhum à partir de la mélasse issue de la fabrication du sucre.  L’essor de l’invention de la machine à vapeur et de son adoption dans les habitations sucrière va intensifier et concentrer la production en sucre les grandes usines. Les habitations isolées vont alors se concentrer exclusivement sur la fabrication du rhum agricole, améliorée par l’adoption de la colonne à plateaux importée d’Europe remplaçant l’alambic. Après 1960, la fermeture de la plupart des habitations sucrières met fin à la production du rhum industriel. Le rhum agricole prend place avec ces saveurs et son terroir, ce qui en fait un rhum reconnu dans le monde entier. Parti les neufs distilleries encore fumantes, l’Habitation La Favorite est restée une distillerie artisanale.

Cette habitation, à l’origine sucrière, a longtemps été nommée “La Jambette”, rivière qui l’alimentait en énergie hydraulique avant l’arrivée de la machine à vapeur. Elle est rebaptisée au début du 19ème siècle “La Favorite” par son nouveau propriétaire, Charles Henry. L’activité va s’orienter au fil du siècle vers la production de rhum et notamment suite à la faillite générale de 1875, aggravée par le cyclone de 1891 qui causa de nombreux dégâts.

En 1909, la famille DORMOY rachète aux enchères l’Habitation La Favorite. Henri DORMOY, nouveau propriétaire, fit construire, en 1920,  une imposante maison de maître avec des tourelles d’angle (elle n’appartient plus à la famille DORMOY depuis les années 70 et elle peut être visitée uniquement lors de la journée du patrimoine). Son architecture est magnifique et aujourd’hui, elle est classée comme monument historique. Il modernisa aussi la distillerie à l’aide d’une machine à vapeur , datant de 1906 et fabriqué par Henri MARRIOL, elle développe 360 CV. L’Habitation devient ainsi autonome, la bagasse (résidus du broyage de la canne à sucre) alimentant la machine à vapeur.

Après la deuxième guerre mondiale, l’un des ses fils, André DORMOY, suite à la mort de son père, rachète les parts de la distillerie à ses frères et sœurs pour perpetuer l’activité de l’Habitation. En 2000, Paul DORMOY reprend la succession de la distillerie accompagné de son fils Franck DORMOY qui le rejoint en 2006 dans cette aventure familiale.

De nos jours, l’Habitation La Favorite est l’un des rares distilleries à être restée indépendante et familiale. Centenaire, La famille DORMOY a su préserver le savoir faire de la production du rhum agricole AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) qui certifie la qualité, le caractère et l’authenticité des rhums de la Martinique. C’est à la fois l’expression d’une spécificité intimement liée à notre terroir et la reconnaissance d’un savoir-faire ancestral unique.

 

Après avoir fait la courte visite, dirigez vous vers le hangar pour profiter d’une dégustation dans la boutique.

 

 

N’hésitez pas à déguster notamment la Flibuste ou la Privilège qui sont toutes deux des bouteilles réputées en Martinique. Je vous laisse le plaisir de les découvrir. Vous pourrez aussi compléter vos emplettes par des verres, t-shirts de la marque “La Favorite”. N’hésitez pas non plus à aller sur leur site internet afin de vous renseigner au préalable sur les différents rhum conçus par cette habitation.

 

En termes de conseils, Ø  Circulation en Martinique : En semaine, vous ferez face à des bouchons aux abords des zones industrielles ou commerciales, notamment le matin, dans le sens du Sud (Rivières Salée, N5) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1) et de l’Est (Robert, N1) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1), de 7h à 9h30, et inversement en fin de soirée de 17h00 à 18h30. Pensez à votre trajet afin de vous adapter à cette circulation qui peut être dense et vous faire perdre facilement du temps. Ø  Visite et dégustation gratuites : –           Intérêt : 2 sur 5, il ne s’agit pas de la plus belle habitation que vous aurez l’occasion de visiter. Le domaine n’est pas exceptionnel. Toutefois, n’hésitez pas à venir faire une simple dégustation pour apprécier le savoir-faire de cette Habitation familiale. Je vous conseille de goûter La Flibuste. Ø  Ouverture : lundi au vendredi (sauf jour férié) de 8h à 16h et le samedi matin de 9h à 12h (novembre à mai). Divers : vous pouvez visiter l’Habitation Dillon, située à une dizaine de minutes en voiture, elle est localisée aussi sur la commune de Fort-de-France. Vous pouvez vous balader dans le centre de Fort-de-France, y découvrir son marché ou explorer les hauteurs de la commune avec les Jardins de Balata.

The Habitation La Favorite is one of the two distilleries located in the town of Fort-de-France. Open Monday to Friday (except holidays) from 8am  to 12 pm and 1:30 pm to 16 pm. The visit and the tasting are free.

 

Itinerary

Join the A1 motorway from Fort-de-France and take the Dillon exit. Take a right at the first traffic lights and continue straight ahead (D13). You will meet several roundabouts keep going straight ahead. Pass a last roundabout and the road will take you naturally to this crossing where it will turn left. Go at the end of the street to the barrier and take the road to the distillery.

 

 

 

 

 

 

You will arrive on a small parking lot. The environment around you is not the most beautiful.

Habitation La Favorite

You will be able to make a short visit of the distillery allowing you to observe the steam engine or the distillation columns of the top of a floor or to go down the stairs to observe them more closely. Do not hesitate to read the tablets to understand the different processes that lead to the production of rum. Here are some pictures of what you will have the opportunity to see.

 

A little of History…….

In the 19th century, many rum distilleries were mainly sugar houses. They distilled their rum from the molasses resulting from the manufacture of sugar. The rise of the invention of the steam engine and its adoption in sugar houses will intensify and concentrate sugar production in large factories. The isolated dwellings will then concentrate exclusively on the production of agricultural rum, improved by the adoption of the European imported tray column replacing the still. After 1960, the closure of most sugar houses put an end to the production of industrial rum. The agricultural rum takes place with these flavors and its terroir, making it a rum recognized throughout the world. Starting from the nine still steaming distilleries, the Habitation La Favorite has remained an artisanal distillery.

This home, originally a sugar mill, has long been called “La Jambette”, a river that supplied it with hydraulic energy before the arrival of the steam engine. It was renamed in the early 19th century “La Favorite” by its new owner, Charles Henry. The activity will be oriented over the century towards the production of rum and especially following the general bankruptcy of 1875, aggravated by the cyclone of 1891 that has caused a lot of damage.

In 1909, the DORMOY family bought the Habitation La Favorite at auction. In 1920, Henri DORMOY, the new owner, built an imposing mansion with corner turrets (it does not belonged to the DORMOY family since the 1970s and can only be visited on Heritage Day) . Its architecture is magnificent and today it is classified as a historical monument.

He also modernized the distillery using a steam engine, dating from 1906 and manufactured by Henri MARRIOL, it develops 360 CV. The Habitation thus has became autonomous, the bagasse (residues of the grinding of the sugar cane) feeding the steam engine.

After the Second World War, one of his sons, André DORMOY, following the death of his father, bought the shares of the distillery to his brothers and sisters to perpetuate the activity of the Habitation. In 2000, Paul DORMOY took over the estate of the distillery accompanied by his son Franck DORMOY who joined him in 2006 in this family adventure.

 

Nowadays, the Habitation La Favorite is one of the few distilleries to remain independent and family. Centenary, The DORMOY family has managed to preserve the know-how of the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) rum production, which certifies the quality, the character and the authenticity of the rums of Martinique. It is both the expression of a specificity intimately linked to our terroir and the recognition of a unique ancestral know-how.

 

 

 

After a short visit, head to the hangar to enjoy a tasting in the shop.

 

Do not hesitate to taste the Flibuste or the Privilege, both of which are renowned bottles in Martinique. I leave you the pleasure of discovering them. You can also complete your shopping with glasses, t-shirts of the brand “La Favorite”. Do not hesitate to visit their website to find out in advance about the various rum designed by this habitation.

 

Tips

Ø Circulation in Martinique:  During the weeks you will encounter many traffic jams from 7 a.m. to 9. 30 a.m. in the industrial and commercial areas. Especially mornings driving from south (Rivière Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), but also East (Robert , N1) going North , you will find the same traffic jams every evening on the other side from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Tip, think of the way and time you want to travel in order not to lose time.

Ø  Free visit and tasting :

– Interest: 2 out of 5, this is not the most beautiful home you will have the opportunity to visit. The area is not exceptional. However, do not hesitate to come and make a simple tasting to appreciate the know-how of this Family House. I suggest you try La Flibuste.

Ø  Opening hours : Monday to friday (except holidays) from 8 am to 4 pm and Saturday morning from 9 am to 12 pm (November to May)

 

Others : You can visit the Habitation Dillon located about 10 minutes away by car. It is on the municipality of Fort de France. You can walk in the center of Fort-de-France, discover its market or explore the heights toward with les Jardins de Balata.
