Welcome to the town of Anse Bertrand, located in the north of Grande-Terre. A land of refuge for the last Caribbean, the municipal territory became over the years an agricultural land for cotton and sugar cane. Today, the town’s economy is dominated by the cultivation of sugar cane. Many vestiges are still present in the area (mills or the Habitation Mahaudière, famous for its trial). Also located, the community of Anse Bertrand also enjoys seaside activities (Anse de la Petite Chapelle, Anse Laborde, etc.). In terms of land activities, viewpoints (Pointe de la Vigie) and seaside hikes or loops are set up to help you discover essential places such as Pointe des Souffleurs and Porte d’Enfer.
Pointe de la Grande Vigie
An atypical and unmissable place in the North of Grande Terre. This site offers you a fantastic panorama of the Atlantic Ocean with, in good weather, a view of the island of Montserrat, Antigua or even La Desirade.
Itinerary
To access this site, starting from Pointe-à-Pitre, head towards Grande-Terre, take the N1 then the N5, towards Morne à l’Eau. A spacious car park is provided at the entrance because this site is busy, you will find there in the form of small huts, small souvenirs or food shops.
Pass through the barrier and turn to your right to discover this magnificent viewpoint.
Beyond being a tourist site, this site is one of the eight forests of the North of Grande Terre. Through its eco-system, the large cliffs offer varied habitats through their inclination and exposure to the sun. These are nesting sites for seabirds and sites rich in shrub and cactus biodiversity (including an endangered species).
To access the end of the Pointe, you must cross the vegetation via a marked path.
This vegetation that surrounds you is so-called xerophilic vegetation. This vegetation is generally found on land with difficult conditions (strong sunshine, rocky soil, strong wind, sea spray). However, the reserves in the north of the mainland list more than 200 species.
Walk along the path to already have a spectacular view of the ocean and the cliffs of northern Grande Terre. in the direction, you will see the Porte d’Enfer in the distance.
Continue on your way, you observe that there are no large trees due to the difficult environmental conditions of the site.
Once again enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding cliffs. You arrive at the end of Pointe de la Grande Vigie.
Here you are at the Pointe, 80 meters above sea level.
In the distance, on a clear day, you can see the island of Montserrat or Antigua to the north and La Desirade to the south.
A splendid panorama !
End of the visit, simply take the path on your right to complete the walking loop of the site.
Good visit !
Note that this site is also the starting point for two hikes, the Trace des Falaises (part of the Boucle du Nord Grande Terre) and the Trace des Pêcheur.
