Welcome to the municipality of Le Marin, a location which is usually crowded to go to the many beaches of the South of the island. The seafront restaurants and the beautiful Marin Bay are a popular destination for tourists and sailors. You will also have access to numerous water sports activities, you can paraglide from (Dreary “Morne” Gommier) or simply visit the covered market where you will find spices, fruits, vegetables and other artisanal confections. Open your eyes also to enjoy lobster and freshly caught fish.

In terms of services, you will easily find a post office, a gas station, banks and a supermarket in the town of Marin.

Itinerary

To get to the starting point of the hike, from Fort-de-France, join the A1 expressway and then head towards the south of the island (N5). You will pass through two roundabouts on the commune of Ducos (zones of activities) then two other roundabouts on the town of Rivière-Salée. Follow the direction of the commune of Marin. After passing the commune of Sainte-Luce then the market town of Marin, turn right direction the town of Sainte-Anne (D9).

Go past the gendarmerie and take the third exit of the roundabout (Cap Macré) you will then be on a communal road. Go straight ahead and turn right after a school (keep the direction Cap Macré). Go straight ahead and watch on your left after a climb the sign indicating the direction of Anse Grosse Roche. Turn left and always go this same direction to reach the parking lot of the starting point of the hike.

The parking is spacious and you will not have too much trouble parking. However, consider starting at the earliest on weekends, the beach at Anse Grosse Roche is quite busy and the parking lots quickly taken. Go near the wooden barrier you will there find the starting point for many hikes.

Boucle des Mornes

A few meters further you will see an information sign indicating the various hikes you can make in order to discover the innumerable panoramic views of the Atlantic and the Anses that these trails offer.

You will have access to various loops of varying length and seaside paths (see photo below). You can also join the great hike of the Trace des Caps which runs along the south-eastern seafront of Martinique. All these loops and paths are accessible to the whole family. These information poles will guide you for all walks.

I decided to do the Boucle des Mornes “dreary” hike, a 4.8 kilometers course with a positive altitude of 70 m. It is accessible to all the family and it takes about  1h30 to 2h of steps to fully enjoy the panoramic views that you discover all along the way.

Facing this sign, you just have to follow the path on your right.

This path takes you in the middle of a vegetation of seaside. You will have to cross stairs allowing you the ascent of the first dreary.

Take your time to observe the landscape on your left during this ascent. A wooden balcony will allow you to observe the first of the many panoramic views of this beautiful landscape.

Continue to climb again for about ten minutes, the trail gradually ascending to a first plateau and then descending.

When you arrive in the hollow of a ravine, you are ready for the ascent of the second dreary. Your efforts will be rewarded at the top after walking on this gravelly path and climbing these series of steps.

Panoramic view of Cap Ferré

The trail goes then down progressively allowing you to contemplate the landscape on the different Anses that surround you. Continue straight ahead, the trail arrives in undergrowth in the back of the beach.

Here you are near the beach of Cap Macré. Follow the sign posts to join the Trace des Caps hike to Anse Grosse Roche beach.

You will go along the coast in the middle of the seaside vegetation, multiple information posts will help you to find your way and will guide you.

Take the time to admire the Anse of whales on your way. Enjoy!

Continue following the indicated path. It will take you to a bifurcation allowing you to go on Pointe Macré or to go through the pure land going to the beach of Anse Grosse Roche.

Here are the different views that you will be able to see from the Pointe Macré.

Turn around and take the trail through the land to the Anse Grosse Roche beach. This beach has the particularity of having a cliff with a heart-shaped hole.

Walk along the beach and head for the path that runs along the cliff.

This trail will take you to the Chapel of the Virgin of the Sailors. For the bravest, you can observe a beautiful sunrise from this chapel, the proof in video on Youtube ==> The sunrise from the Chapel of the Virgin of the Sea.

In front of the chapel, take the path behind you to go back to the car park or leave on your left to do the Boucle Etang Massel.

TIPS,

Ø Circulation in Martinique:  During the weeks you will encounter many traffic jams from 7 a.m. to 9. 30 a.m. in the industrial and commercial areas. Especially mornings driving from south (Rivière Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), but also East (Robert , N1) going North , you will find the same traffic jams every evening on the other side from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Tip, think of the way and time you want to travel in order not to lose time.

Ø Facilities: good pair of hiking shoes or tennis shoes bag with (knife, rain coat, lamp, hats or caps, sun glasses, sun cream and mosquito repellent).

Ø  Santé :

–           Difficulty: 4/10 this hike can be done by the whole family. A little climbing to be able to see the views.

–           Try to start the hike early in the morning as the heat during the stay can represent a difficulty and requires a minimal sporting activity. This hike is most of the time under the sun.

–          Take your time and go as you wish, plan the time that you will need depending on your physical condition..

–          –          Important tip: always have a bottle of water per person and a snack in your bag; with the heat any hike can be dangerous especially if you are tired.

Others: you can relax; go swimming on the different beaches during the hike in the Whales Anse, Anse Grosse Roche, and Cap Macré. Or simply do the other walks of the hike.
