L’Habitation Pécoul est un domaine situé sur la commune de Basse-Pointe
Ouvert uniquement lors de la journée européenne du patrimoine (troisième week-end de septembre)
Merci à la Fondation Clément pour leur engagement dans la conservation et la mise en valeur du patrimoine culturel dans la Caraïbes.
La visite se déroule sur tout le week-end et des guides à sont présents pour vous raconter l’histoire de ce domaine et vous montrer ces particularités architecturales.
Itinéraire
Partant de Fort-de-France, vous pouvez choisir de passer par la côte Atlantique ou de passer par le centre de la Martinique. Par la côte Atlantique, rejoignez la voie rapide A1 puis prenez la sortie en Direction de la commune du Robert (N1). Vous allez devoir traverser la commune du Robert puis aller en direction des communes de Sainte-Marie, Le Marigot et Le Lorrain. Traversez ces communes et suivez la direction de Basse-Pointe (N1). Prenez à droite au rond-point, juste après la commune du Lorrain (toujours N1) et continuez tout droite pendant une dizaine de minutes. Soyez attentif, l’entrée du domaine se trouvera sur votre gauche.
Vous pourrez vous garer sur l’espace vert et vous n’aurez pas de mal à trouver une place.
Dès votre descente du véhicule, dirigez-vous vers l’entrée de l’habitation.
L’Habitation Pecoul
Lors de votre visite, vous allez découvrir les jardins, la maison principale, les dépendances des domestiques et équipements industriels qui servaient autrefois à la fabrication du sucre.
Nous avons commencé la visite par faire le tour du domaine. Un guide est présent sur site pour vous raconter l’histoire du domaine et des différents bâtiments qui composent cette habitation.
De nombreux vestiges d’antan (moulin, sucrerie, aqueduc, distillerie, purgerie) sont toujours présents sur site et parfaire au charme de ce site.
Baladez vous au grès de vos envies pour profiter des nombreux points de vues sur l’architecture et la maison principale de l’habitation.

Le dernier bâtiment rénové par la Fondation Clément est le hangar qui est associé au pigeonnier, qui a servi à la fois de magasin, d’atelier et d’hôpital depuis le 18ème siècles. Il a été restauré en 2013 en gardant respectueusement son aspect et sa confection du début du 20ème siècles.
Hangar
Un peu d’histoire ……
Ce site a vu le jour au 18ème siècles dans une région colonisée pour sa culture. Au 19 ème siècles, l’activité agricole prend un tout autre virage avec l’arrivée de la vapeur. Sucrerie traditionnelle puis distillerie agricole et enfin culture dans la banane dans les années 1950, cette habitation a su évoluer pour prospérer.
En 1801, la famille Pécoul devient propriétaire de l’habitation. Elle s’étend sur 140 hectares donc 120 hectares agricoles.
En 1849, la famille Pécoul quitte la Martinique suite à l’élection d’Auguste-François Pécoul comme député de la Martinique.
En 1901, Alexandre Pécoul redécouvre cette propriété d’intérêt pour la famille à travers des clichés des bâtiments du site.
En 1920, commence la transformation de l’habitation. Sa soeur, Augusta d’Origny, entreprend des travaux de modernisations des équipements industriels et d’embellissement.
De génération en génération, les travaux vont durer et le site sera reconnu comme Monument historique en 1981.
En 2001, le domaine devient la propriété de GBH. L’activité agricole de la banane et de la canne y est toujours présente.
Depuis, GBH et la Fondation Clément tente de conserver au mieux ce patrimoine afin de rendre hommage à l’oeuvre d’Augusta Pécoul.

Ø Circulation en Martinique : En semaine, vous ferez face à des bouchons aux abords des zones industrielles ou commerciales, notamment le matin, dans le sens du Sud (Rivières Salée, N5) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1) et de l’Est (Robert, N1) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1), de 7h à 9h30, et inversement en fin de soirée de 17h00 à 18h30. Pensez à votre trajet afin de vous adapter à cette circulation qui peut être dense et vous faire perdre facilement du temps. Ø Visite gratuite pendant la journée du patrimoine : – Intérêt : 5 sur 5, l’Habitation est magnifique. Un guide est présent pour en découvrir d’autant plus sur l’histoire et les secrets que recèlent ce site. Le cadre y est fort agréable pour s’y promener et observer les vestiges industriels d’antan qui servait à la sucrerie et à la distillerie de l’époque.

Divers : située à une trentaine de minutes en voiture, vous pouvez vous orienter vers Les Gorges de la Falaise pour un bain de fraîcheur ou aller en direction de la commune de Macouba (30 minutes) pour effectuer la visite de l’Habitation J.M. |

L’Habitation Pécoul is an estate located in the commune of Basse-Pointe
Open only on European Heritage Day (third weekend in September)
Thank you to the Clément Foundation for their commitment to the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage in the Caribbean.
The visit takes place over the whole weekend and guides are present to tell you the history of this area and show you these architectural particularities.
Itinerary
Departing from Fort-de-France, you can choose to go by the Atlantic coast or go through the center of Martinique. By the Atlantic coast, join the A1 expressway then take the exit in the direction of the town of Robert (N1). You will have to cross the town of Robert then go towards the towns of Sainte-Marie, Le Marigot and Le Lorrain. Cross these towns and follow the direction of Basse-Pointe (N1). Turn right at the roundabout, just after the town of Lorrain (always N1) and continue straight for about ten minutes. Be careful, the entrance to the domain will be on your left.
You can park on the green space and you will have no trouble finding a space.
As soon as you get out of the vehicle, go to the entrance of the house.
Pecoul Habitation
During your visit, you will discover the gardens, the main house, the outbuildings of the servants and industrial equipment which were once used for the manufacture of sugar.
We started the visit by touring the estate. A guide is present on site to tell you the history of the estate and the various buildings that make up this dwelling.
Many vestiges of yesteryear (mill, sugar factory, aqueduct, distillery, purgerie) are still present on site and add to the charm of this site.
Stroll around as you wish to enjoy the many views of the architecture and the main house of the dwelling.

The last building renovated by the Fondation Clément is the hangar which is associated with the dovecote, which has served as a store, workshop and hospital since the 18th century. It was restored in 2013 respectfully keeping its appearance and its manufacture from the beginning of the 20th century.

A little history ……
This site was born in the 18th century in a region colonized for its culture. In the 19th century, agricultural activity took a completely different turn with the arrival of steam. Traditional sugar factory then agricultural distillery and finally banana cultivation in the 1950s, this house has evolved to prosper.
In 1801, the Pécoul family became the owners of the house. It extends over 140 hectares, therefore 120 agricultural hectares.
In 1849, the Pécoul family left Martinique following the election of Auguste-François Pécoul as deputy for Martinique.
In 1901, Alexandre Pécoul rediscovered this property of interest to the family through photos of the buildings on the site.
In 1920, the transformation of the house began. His sister, Augusta d’Origny, undertook works to modernize industrial equipment and beautify them.
From generation to generation, the works will last and the site will be recognized as a Historic Monument in 1981.
In 2001, the estate became the property of GBH. The agricultural activity of banana and cane is still present there.
Since then, GBH and the Fondation Clément have tried to preserve this heritage as well as possible in order to pay tribute to the work of Augusta Pécoul.

Ø Traffic in Martinique: During the week, you will face traffic jams around industrial or commercial areas, especially in the morning, in the direction of the South (Rivières Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1) and from the East (Robert, N1) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), from 7 am to 9.30 am, and vice versa at the end of the evening from 5 pm to 6.30 pm. Think about your route in order to adapt to this traffic which can be dense and easily waste time. Ø Free visit during Heritage Day: – Interest: 5 out of 5, the Habitation is magnificent. A guide is present to discover all the more about the history and the secrets that this site conceals. The setting is very pleasant for strolling and observing the industrial vestiges of yesteryear which were used for the sugar refinery and the distillery of the time. Ø Opening: Open on weekends (third weekend of September). Miscellaneous: located about 30 minutes away by car, you can head to Les Gorges de la Falaise for a cool dip or head towards the town of Macouba (30 minutes) to visit the Habitation J.M. |
