L’Habitation Saint-Etienne (HSE) est une distillerie située sur la commune de Gros Morne.

Ouvert tous les jours de 9h à 17h, la visite et la dégustation sont gratuites.

 

 

Rejoignez la voie rapide A1 de Fort-de-France puis prendre la sortie en direction de Saint-Joseph (N4). Vous pouvez aussi en venant du Sud ou de l’Est de l’île, rejoindre la N4 en empruntant la N1. Vous aurez à traverser notamment la commune de Saint-Joseph si vous optez pour la première solution. La route est assez vallonnée et faite de nombreux virages pour arriver jusqu’à l’Habitation Saint-Etienne.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Empruntez le chemin et descendez jusqu’au parking où vous pourrez déjà observer une végétation assez luxuriante autour du parking.

 

Habitation Saint-Etienne (HSE)

Vous pouvez faire un premier tour des chais vous permettant d’observer, la colonne de distillation ou encore les fours qui ont servi à la fabrication du rhum HSE à la fin du XIX ème siècles.

 

Tout autour des chais et le long du chemin après le parking, vous observerez une végétation verdoyante omniprésente. Il s’agit du jardin botanique de l’habitation. Des magnifiques fleurs, arbres majestueux et des sculptures d’artistes sont présents sur le domaine.

Un peu d’histoire…….

Au XIX ème siècle,  de nombreuses distilleries de rhum étaient principalement des habitations sucrières. Elles distillaient leur rhum à partir de la mélasse issue de la fabrication du sucre.  L’essor de l’invention de la machine à vapeur et de son adoption dans les habitations sucrière va intensifier et concentrer la production en sucre les grandes usines. Les habitations isolées vont alors se concentrer exclusivement sur la fabrication du rhum agricole, améliorée par l’adoption de la colonne à plateaux importée d’Europe remplaçant l’alambic. Après 1960, la fermeture de la plupart des habitations sucrières met fin à la production du rhum industriel. Le rhum agricole prend place avec ces saveurs et son terroir, ce qui en fait un rhum reconnu dans le monde entier. Parti les neufs distilleries encore fumantes, l’Habitation Saint-Etienne est restée une distillerie artisanale.

L’Habitation Saint-Etienne fut édifiée sur les bases d’une sucrerie.  Le domaine de cette sucrerie nommée “La Maugée”  s’étendait au début du XIXème siècle sur plus de 400 hectares, de la commune du Gros-Morne à la commune de Saint-Joseph.

En 1882, la sucrerie est rachetée par Amédée Aubéry, un jeune capitaine d’industrie qui deviendra l’une des figures emblématiques de l’économie martiniquaise. Il transforme la sucrerie en distillerie agricole et la modernise. L’énergie hydraulique utilisée, était fournie par la rivière Lézarde grâce à un canal empierré qui traversait le jardin créole.

En 1909, la propriété passe aux mains de la famille Simonnet, qui développera l’activité de la distillerie jusqu’à son déclin à la fin des années 80. Le domaine est racheté en 1994 par Yves et José Hayot qui relancent la marque HSE. Les rhums HSE sont certifiés AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) qui certifie la qualité, le caractère et l’authenticité des rhums de la Martinique. C’est à la fois l’expression d’une spécificité intimement liée à notre terroir et la reconnaissance d’un savoir-faire ancestral unique

Suite à son achat, ils restaurent et valorisent le patrimoine architectural de l’habitation, inscrite depuis, à l’inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques. La distillerie est l’un des derniers et plus beaux témoins de la maîtrise et de l’esthétique de l’architecture industrielle de la fin du XIXème siècle en Martinique.

Aujourd’hui le rhum n’est plus distillé sur le domaine Saint-Etienne mais à l’Habitation Simon, située sur la commune du François.  Toutefois, vous pouvez observer que les rhums HSE vieillissent toujours dans les différents chais du domaine.

 

Après avoir fait la courte visite, dirigez vous vers la boutique pour profiter d’une dégustation. Des expositions, concerts, conférences, spectacles vivants sont accueillies régulièrement sur le domaines (Les Foudres HSE).

N’hésitez pas à déguster les rhum vieux, extra-vieux ou encore les éditions spéciales (notamment le Black Sheriff)  qui sont des bouteilles courtisées . Je vous laisse le plaisir de les découvrir. Vous pourrez aussi compléter vos emplettes par des verres, t-shirts de la marque “HSE”. N’hésitez pas non plus à aller sur leur site internet afin de vous renseigner au préalable sur les différents rhum conçus par cette habitation.

En termes de conseils, Ø  Circulation en Martinique : En semaine, vous ferez face à des bouchons aux abords des zones industrielles ou commerciales, notamment le matin, dans le sens du Sud (Rivières Salée, N5) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1) et de l’Est (Robert, N1) vers le Nord (Fort-de-France, A1), de 7h à 9h30, et inversement en fin de soirée de 17h00 à 18h30. Pensez à votre trajet afin de vous adapter à cette circulation qui peut être dense et vous faire perdre facilement du temps. Ø  Visite et dégustation gratuites : –           Intérêt : 4 sur 5, il s’agit d’une belle habitation avec son jardin botanique. Etant donné que le rhum n’est plus produit sur le domaine, vous n’aurez pas l’occasion d’avoir effluves de la fabrication du rhum. La boutique n’y est pas très grande et la dégustation et la vente du rhum se font au même endroit. Ø  Ouverture : Tous les jours de 9h à 17h. Divers : située à une vingtaine de minutes en voiture, vous pouvez vous orienter vers l’aire d’accueil de Cœur Bouliki (point départ de la Boucle de Rabuchon) ou aller en direction des communes de Trinité ou du Robert pour vous y baigner.

Habitation Saint-Etienne (HSE) is a distillery located in the town of Gros Morne. Open daily from 9h to 17h, the visit and tasting are free.

 

 

Join the A1 motorway from Fort-de-France and take the exit towards Saint-Joseph (N4). You can also from the South or East of the island, join the N4 by taking the N1. You will have to cross in particular the commune of Saint-Joseph if you opt for the first solution to reach there. The road is quite hilly and made many turns to reach the Habitation Saint-Etienne.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Take the path and go down to the car park where you can already see fairly lush vegetation around the car park.

 

You can make a first tour of the cellars allowing you to observe, the distillation column or the ovens that were used to make HSE rum at the end of the 19th century.

 

All around the cellars and if you continue your way past the parking, you will observe a green vegetation omnipresent, this is the botanical garden of the house. Beautiful flowers, majestic trees and sculptures of artists are present on the estate.

A little history…….

In the 19th century, many rum distilleries were mainly sugarhouses. They distilled their rum from the molasses resulting from the manufacture of sugar. The rise of the invention of the steam engine and its adoption in sugarhouses will intensify and concentrate sugar production in large factories. The isolated dwellings will then concentrate exclusively on the manufacture of agricultural rum, improved by the adoption of the European imported tray column replacing the still. After 1960, the closure of most sugarhouses put an end to the production of industrial rum. The agricultural rum takes place with these flavors and its terror, making it rum recognized throughout the world. Starting from the nine still steaming distilleries, Habitation Saint-Etienne remained an artisanal distillery.

Habitation Saint-Etienne was built on the basis of a candy. The domain of this sugar factory named “La Maugée” extended at the beginning of the XIXth century on more than 400 hectares, of the commune of Gros-Morne to the commune of Saint-Joseph.

In 1882, the sugar refinery was bought by Amédée Aubéry, a young industrial captain who became one of the emblematic figures of Martinique’s economy. It transforms the sugar refinery into an agricultural distillery and modernizes it. The river Lézarde through a channel stone that crossed the creole garden provided the hydraulic energy used.

In 1909, the property passes into the hands of the Simonnet family, which will develop the distillery business until its decline in the late 80s. Yves and José Hayot who relaunch the brand HSE buy the estate in 1994. HSE rums are certified AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) that certifies the quality, character and authenticity of rums from Martinique. It is both the expression of a specificity intimately linked to our terror and the recognition of a unique ancestral know-how.

Following its purchase, they restore and enhance the architectural heritage of the dwelling, inscribed since, the additional inventory of historical monuments. The distillery is one of the last and most beautiful witnesses of the mastery and aesthetics of industrial architecture of the late nineteenth century in Martinique.

Today the rum is no longer distilled on the Saint-Etienne estate but at Habitation Simon, located in the commune of François. However, you can observe that HSE rums are still aging in the different cellars of the estate.

 

 

After a short visit, head to the shop for a tasting. Exhibitions, concerts, conferences, live shows are regularly hosted on the estate (Les Foudres HSE). During the visit to the shop, I had the opportunity to observe works of art while I tasted old rum.

 

 

Do not hesitate to taste old rum, extra-old or special editions (including the Black Sheriff) that are bottles courted. I leave you the pleasure of discovering them. You can also complement your shopping with glasses, t-shirts of the brand “HSE”. Do not hesitate to go on their website to learn about the different rum made by this house.

 

Tips : Ø Circulation in Martinique:  During the weeks you will encounter many traffic jams from 7 a.m. to 9. 30 a.m. in the industrial and commercial areas. Especially mornings driving from south (Rivière Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), but also East (Robert , N1) going North , you will find the same traffic jams every evening on the other side from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Tip, think of the way and time you want to travel in order not to lose time. Ø Free Visit and tasting: –              Interest : 4 / 5, it is a habitation with a botanic garden. Knowing that rum is no longer produce there, you will not be able to see how rum is produced. The shop is not very big and the tasting and sale of rum is done in the shop. Ø Opening hours:  every day from 9 am to 5 pm. Others: At about 20 minutes drive, you can go to the Coeur Bouliki area or either go in direction of Trinité or the Robert and have a swim there.
