Bienvenue sur l’île de Marie Galante, située au sud de la Guadeloupe et composée des communes de Grand Bourg, Saint-Louis et Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante. Elle est en superficie (158 km2), la plus grande des trois îles qui entourent la Guadeloupe (La Desirade et Les Saintes). Cette îles joignable par transport maritime et par un aérodrome, a gardé tout son charme d’antan. Le rythme de vie y est paisible, l’environnement et les paysages y ont été conservés avec les “cents moulins” et les mares qui servaient jadis de point d’eau pour la consommation et les activités de tous les jours. En termes d’activités cette île est assez diversifiée avec ses randonnées, plages de sable blanc magnifiques et ces habitations qui sont les seuls à titrer un rhum à 59 degrés en Guadeloupe. Vous trouverez forcement votre bonheur entre les activités nautiques, pédestres et culturelles. En termes de services, l’île recèle d’artisans ayant des boutiques, de restaurants avec des cadres magnifiques et ambiances diverses. Vous y trouverez banques, postes, station-services dans chaque commune. L’île est assez grande, il est donc préférable de louer une voiture à votre arrivée sur la commune de Grand Bourg.
Accès par bateau
Pour accéder à l’île de Marie-Galante, vous avez deux accès principaux depuis la Guadeloupe par transport maritime. Depuis la garde maritime de Bergevin située à Pointe-à-Pitre et la gare maritime de Saint-François, vous aurez 45 min à 1 h de traversée.
Nous sommes partis de Pointe-à-Pitre. Pour les horaires et réservations, renseignez-vous sur le site internet de la compagnie “Express des îles” . D’autres compagnies existent mais nous avons été satisfaits de celle-ci. La traversée peut-être mouvementée à l’aller, prévoir le mal de mer si personne déjà sujette à ce cas.
A votre arrivée sur Grand-Bourg, il est préférable de louer une voiture car l’île est grande. (Prévoyez à l’avance). De nombreuses compagnies locales ou plus familières (Hertz) existent sur l’île.
Gueule Grand Gouffre
Un lieu atypique et incontournable de l’île de Marie-Galante, la Gueule Grand Gouffre, vous offrira une particularité géologique magnifique qui a été érodée par les vagues au fil du temps.
Ce site est située au Nord-Est de l’île. Vous pourrez également observer au loin par beau temps, les côtes de la Grande-Terre et l’île de la Désirade.
Itinéraire
Pour accéder au site de la Gueule Grand Gouffre, depuis Grand Bourg, partez en direction du Nord de l’île soit par la commune de Saint-Louis ou de Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante. Les des routes du littoral mènent à ce site. Soyez attentif aux panneaux à l’approche du site pour trouver la route où se trouve au bout le parking.
Garez vous au bout du chemin à proximité de la barrière en bois. Vous n’aurez pas de mal à trouver une place.
Passez la barrière et orientez-vous sur votre droite pour découvrir ce magnifique gouffre.

Pour les plus aventuriers, revenez sur vos pas. Vous pouvez suivre le second sentier aperçu qui part à gauche de la table de pique-nique.
Chaussez de bonnes chaussures, vous pouvez avancer dans ce chemin. Vous trouverez au bout un premier panorama entre la végétation.
Continuez votre chemin sur la gauche pour entrevoir un nouveau partenariat et suivre un sentier qui devient descend de plus en plus.
Ce sentier vous emmène vers une crique, mêlant le fracas des vagues sur la roche et la couleur de l’écume et des eaux turquoises. Un véritable spectacle.
Voici le bout du sentier. Vous voici dans la crique enclavée entre les falaises et sa végétation couchée.

Ø Circulation sur l’île de Marie-Galante : Privilégiez la location d’un véhicule car l’île est assez grande. Vous aurez plaisir à conduite sur cette île entre les paysages et la circulation très fluide, vous n’aurez aucune contrainte de temps, un vrai bonheur. Ø Visite gratuite : – Intérêt : 3 sur 5, le site est incontournable sur l’île de Marie-Galante. La visite ne prend qu’une dizaine de minutes, après il vous est possible de rattraper un petit sentier de bord de mer pour découvrir après dix minutes de marche une crique rocailleuse qui a son charme. Divers : Vous pouvez vous orienter vers l’Habitation Bellevue, le sentier des Galeries ou le sentier de la Côte Est et des Galets. |

Life is peaceful there, the environment and landscapes are preserved with the “hundred mills” and pools that once served as a water point for consumption and everyday activities. In terms of activities there are many things to do in the island with its hiking, the beautiful white sand beaches and homes that are the only to titrate a rum to 59 degrees in Guadeloupe. You will necessarily find your happiness between nautical, pedestrian and cultural activities. In terms of services, the island is a home to artisans with shops, restaurants with beautiful settings and various atmospheres. You will find banks, stations, gas stations in each municipality. The island is quite large, so it is better to rent a car on your arrival in the town of Grand Bourg.
Access by boat
To access the island of Marie-Galante, you have two main accesses from Guadeloupe by sea transport. From the Bergevin Marine Guard located in Pointe-à-Pitre and the ferry terminal of Saint-François, you will have 45 minutes to 1 hour crossing.
We left from Pointe-à-Pitre. For schedules and reservations, check the website of the company “Express des îles”. Other companies exist but we were satisfied with this one. The crossing may be hectic on the way out, people that may become sea sick should be aware.
When you arrive in Grand-Bourg, it is better to rent a car because the island is big. (Plan ahead). Many local or more familiar companies (Hertz) exist on the island.
Gueule Grand Gouffre
An atypical and unmissable place on the island of Marie-Galante, the Grand Gouffre Maw, will offer you a magnificent geological peculiarity that has been eroded by waves over the time.
This site is located in the North-East of the island. You can also observe in the distance in good weather, the coasts of Grande-Terre and the island of Désirade.
Itinerary
To access the site of the Grand Gouffre Maw, from Grand Bourg, go towards the North of the island either by the municipality of Saint-Louis or Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante. Coastal roads lead to this site. Pay attention to the signs when approaching the site to find the road at the end of the car park.
Park at the end of the path near the wooden gate. You will have no problem finding a place.
Pass the barrier and turn to your right to discover this magnificent chasm.

For the most adventurous, go backwards. You can follow the second preview trail that leaves to the left of the picnic table.
Put on good shoes, you can move on this path. You will find at the end a first panorama between the vegetation.
Continue your path on the left to see a new partnership and follow a path that goes down more and more.
This trail takes you to a cove, mixing the crash of the waves on the rock and the color of the foam and turquoise waters. A real show.
Here is the end of the trail. Here you are in the cove locked between the cliffs and its recumbent vegetation.

Ø Traffic on the island of Marie-Galante: it is easier to rent a car because the island is quite large. You will enjoy driving on this island between landscapes and very fluid traffic, you will have no time constraints, a real pleasure. Ø Free visit: – Interest: 3 out of 5, the site has to be visited on the island of Marie-Galante. The visit only takes about ten minutes, after that you can catch a small path by the sea to discover after ten minutes of walking a rocky cove that has its charm. Others: You can go to Habitation Bellevue, the Galleries Trail or the East Coast Trail and Pebbles. |
