Welcome to the municipality of the Diamant, well known for its majestic Rock and for the biggest beach (approximatively 4 km) of Martinique. You will have the pleasure to discover the church located in the village (historical monument) or you can visit the museum of shells, Cap 110.
It is also possible to practice nautical activities in the town (jet skiing, rock diving, fishing) that will satisfy you and make you discover the town in another way.

For local services, you will find souvenir shops, a covered market, seaside restaurants, and a post office.

It is a peaceful town  where you can spend the day by the sea, facing the Rock, enjoying fruit and other dishes of the market in order to fully enjoy the Caribbean Sea. The sea may sometimes be very restless but the hammock in the shade of the coconut trees are and may then be useful!

Itinerary

The access to this beach is simple, from Fort-de-France, take direction South of the island (A1, then N5), take the exit of the Diamant (D7), the road is rather sinuous with many turns until in the village of Diamant. Drive safely. Go straight ahead and at the roundabout of the VITO petrol station and the Ecomax to reach after a few minutes (turn on the left), the beautiful view on the rock and the woman lying.

A bit of history…..

This Rock formed after the volcanic activity of the Caribbean, a million years ago. Its name “Le Rocher du Diamant” is due to its beveled shape and reflections during certain hours of the day. From its height (more than 170 meters) it faces the municipality of the Diamant, city that owes its name to this Roc basaltic.

At the beginning of the XIXth century, this rock served as a strategic point during the war between France and England. It allowed controlling the navigation between Martinique and Saint Lucia.

The British occupied the fortified block, which was equipped with five cannons, for more than a year from January 1804 to June 1805. A goat and chicken farm was even set up in case of non-supplies by the British forces. Lacking food and water, he surrendered to the French forces.

It is now a protected site by the Conservatoire du Littoral (reserve of an incredible ornithological and submarine richness) and it is probably the last refuge of a reptile, an endemic snake of Martinique. Numerous species of birds also nest on the rock and the seabed (fault of the Rock) which surround it are of great richness and present in particular species of sponges in number and diversity impossible to find elsewhere.
