Welcome to the commune of Schoelcher, university and administrative commune of Martinique. Located on the northern Caribbean border of the island, the community was originally named Case-Navire then was renamed in 1889, Schoelcher, in honor of Victor Schoelcher.

It is one of the most populated municipalities on the island, taking advantage of its seaside geolocation to be the nautical resort of Martinique but also the city where important administrative infrastructures are located such as the university domain, the Palais des Madiana Congress or even the rectorate.

Made up of numerous residential areas (Terreville, Anse Collat, Fond Lahaye, Fond Bernier, etc.), you will not have trouble finding all the local services, gas station, post office, supermarket, banks.

In terms of activities, fishing is very popular, particularly in the main hamlet of Fond Lahaye. You will also have many water activities to practice in the bay of Fort-de-France with the base located at Anse Madame. You can also enjoy the town’s few beaches with Madiana or Case Navire beach.

For film lovers, the Madiana complex will welcome you and for foodies, the town also offers many places to eat like on Case Navire beach, the sunset there is worth the detour.

There is little room for hiking activities, however a route to a waterfall exists in this area. This is the trail to the Anba So Waterfall.

Itinerary

To reach the starting point of the hike, leaving from Fort-de-France (allow twenty minutes of driving), take the A1 towards the north of the island (Schoelcher). Join the N2, the road to the North Caribbean of the island. You catch up with her shortly after passing the Madiana complex.

After catching up with the N2, you arrive at Fond Lahaye, this is where you will see on your right, the sign, Cascade Anba So. Turn right and continue straight ahead to arrive at a small parking lot in front of the trail starting point sign (Be careful, slightly uneven road at the end and few places to park).

You will see this memorial on your way then the entrance to an undergrowth where the starting point of the route is located at the end.

You have a few places to park.

Starting point

La Cascade Anba So

The route is approximately 1 kilometer long for a 20 to 30 minute walk (one way). The path does not present any particular difficulties, however be careful of roots and slips. The hike is marked and accessible to the whole family (children over 6 years old and depending on physical conditions).

Here you are at the start of this forest trail rehabilitated in April/May 2014.

You first enter the Fond Duclos rural road, between dry and humid forest, you are in the middle of a transition from the presence of vegetation which grows on more or less humid sites.

Posters are even put up to tell you the names of the different trees that inhabit this place

The further you advance, the more you enter denser vegetation. This is the departmental forest of the English domain littered with numerous mahoganys.

You are approaching the waterfall, only a few minutes left.

An information panel signals the end of the route.

Here you are in front of the Anba So waterfall, you pass through the bed of the river to approach it.

Not the most impressive waterfall, compared to its sisters on the island, it nevertheless has a certain charm and freshness when you take the time to stop nearby.

Other effluents flow nearby, making it a really nice place for a picnic with family or friends.

The return takes the same route.

It’s up to you to discover it now!

In terms of advice,

Ø  Traffic in Martinique: During the week, you will face traffic jams around industrial or commercial areas, particularly in the morning, in the direction of the South (Rivières Salée, N5) towards the North (Fort-de-France, A1) and from the East (Robert, N1) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and vice versa at the end of the evening from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Think about your journey in order to adapt to this traffic which can be heavy and easily cause you to waste time.

Ø Equipment: Good pair of grippy sneakers or hiking shoes, hiking pole, sports clothing (high socks to avoid stinging plants), hiking bag (knife, flashlight, headlamp, k-way, cap, glasses sunscreen, sunscreen, mosquito repellent).

Ø Health:

–           Difficulty: 3 out of 10, walk with little difference in altitude over short distances possible for families with baby carriers and children over 6 years old (depending on physical condition). Be careful of roots and slippery surfaces.

 –           Usually, always start hikes early in the morning. The heat during the day during minimal sporting activity can become quite stifling. This hike is shaded throughout the entire part of the route.

–          Go at your own pace and plan the time it will take depending on your physical condition.

–          The most important thing, always a bottle of water per person and something to snack on in your bag. With the heat, any fairly physical hikes can be dangerous with fatigue.

Miscellaneous: you can head towards the beaches of Schoelcher, or continue your way towards the North Caribbean, in order to explore the towns of Carbet (Cascade du Carbet for example) and Saint-Pierre (the ruins and its coastline) which presents numerous cultural and sporting activities.
