Welcome to the town of Deshaies, located in the northwest of Basse-Terre. The territory of the commune is made up of twelve places (Bas-Vent, Caféière, La Coque, Pinaud, Riflet,….). Bordered by the Caribbean Sea, you will enjoy magnificent beaches (Grande Anse) in an idyllic setting with the island of Montserrat as your focal point. Privileged places to enjoy magnificent sunsets. This proximity to the sea and its history with piracy makes it a traditional stopover for sailboats and maritime excursions. Coastal walks are also available to you to discover all the golden sand coves of this town.

In terms of services, you will find many seaside restaurants on the beaches and in the town of the town. You will also find a post office, banks, souvenir and spice shops and near gas stations.

Finally, don’t forget to visit the gardens located in the town and in particular the property which was that of the famous comedian Coluche (Jardin Botanique de Deshaies), and which has today become a magnificent botanical and animal garden.

The beach of Anse Tillet is a golden sand beach in a small cove full of charm with a view of Kahouanne islet and Îlet Tête-à-l’Anglais.

Landlocked and below the road, the sound of the waves will be your only noise nuisance. Accessible after a few meters of steps through back-beach vegetation, you will discover the beauty of this uncrowded beach. A slight part of the beach can delight naturists (at the far end on the right). Swimming is not supervised on this beach, be careful of the waves and the current

Itinerary

To access this beach (map above), starting from Pointe-à-Pitre, take the N1 towards Basseterre and Petit-Bourg then the N2 (towards the communes of Lamentin, Morne Rouge Sainte-Rose). This road takes you to the very north of Basse-Terre. Cross all these towns and follow the coast. You will pass Cluny beach and Anse Tillet is located after 5 minutes of driving on your right. You will see the “Pointe du Grand Bas-Vent” Viewpoint. Park at the viewpoint level.

Îlet Kahouanne et Îlet Têt-à-l’Anglais

Few places are available near this viewpoint but it is not a very busy beach and you will not have trouble finding a place nearby. You must park on the side of the road.

Anse Tillet

There, you have to walk a few minutes and go down a small path.

Cross the back beach vegetation to discover the beach and its magnificent setting.

It’s time for you to enjoy this blond sand beach and its turquoise waters. You won’t have trouble finding a place to relax.

As you can see in the photos above and below, the beach has few places in the shade. Remember, especially if you are traveling as a family, to provide protection for children with sunscreen factor 50 or Lycra. The sun is harmful between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In terms of advice,

Ø  Traffic in Guadeloupe: During the week, you will face traffic jams around the Jarry area, particularly in the morning, in the direction of Le Gosier towards Pointe-à-Pitre or Petit-Bourg towards Pointe-à-Pitre and vice versa in late afternoon. Think about your journey in order to adapt to this traffic which can be heavy and easily cause you to waste time.

Ø Equipment: Slides, swimsuit, towel, beach bag (knife, k-way, cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, mosquito repellent).

Ø Health:

–          Quality of the bathing area: Excellent (Source: Ministry of Health, see map);

–          Accessibility: Easily by car and little walking, no disabled access;

–         Sun cream obligatory because the beach is well exposed to the sun, even think about lycras for children and adults;

–          The most important thing, always a bottle of water per person and something to snack on in your bag.

Miscellaneous: you can go see the nearby Botanical Garden of Deshaies, enjoy the other beaches (Grande Anse, Anse de la Perle, Plage du Cluny, etc.) in the town or shop in the village of commune of Deshaies (spices, jewelry and other local products,…).
