Welcome to the town of Diamant, known for its majestic rock (reserve and wealth of ornithological and underwater biodiversity) off the largest beach in Martinique. As for local services, you will find souvenir shops, a covered market, restaurants, a post office and places of memory of the history of Martinique.

The Morne Larcher hike is the ascent of one of the highest summits of the South of Martinique Island. Panoramic views of the town and the Diamond Rock are awaiting for you at the top.

The rise of Morne can also be done by the town of Anses d’Arlet, by Petite Anse.

Itinerary

Access to the start of this hike is quite simple you must go to the town of Diamant (towards the south of the island by the N5 then the D7), cross the village where you can enjoy a superb view of Diamond Rock by going on the pontoon in front of this church (photo attached) if you feel like stopping (D37).

Continue straight and pass the Diamond Market and then to multiple entrances to beaches (6 in number). All along this road, you will be able to observe a vegetation made of grapes and coconut trees allowing you to glimpse the beach of the Diamond.

Continue straight ahead, you will pass the sign of a hotel and 200 meters you will see the sign “Morne Larcher” on your right. Park on the side of the road (in general you will easily have room) and take the path on foot, it is a dead end that will take you to the start of the hike.

Le Morne Larcher

Starting point of the hike (you can do it at the end of the day to enjoy the sunset)

Here you are after a little walk on the street, before the start of the hike. The path takes you on a course in a forest with a positive elevation of more than 300 meters. The course is 3.2 kilometers if you want to go up and down the other side to Petite Anse. It takes about 2:00 to 2:30 hours of walking depending on your rhythm.

I realized this hike on one side of Morne. It took me a 1:00 to 1:30 counting the way and a return in the dark with a frontal to have free arms. Count 2 hours for the round trip.

Il ne sert à rien de courir, il faut partir à point……

The difficulty of ascension is present if you want to increase the rythm or not to arrive faster at the top. The slope to the summit is quite hard.

Tip: know your physical condition and manage your time and that of those who are with you.

I met a father and his child, climbing at their own rythm and they managed to reach the summit. They had left half an hour before me and managed their time perfectly to arrive at the same time as me …

Back to the climb, you will have to help yourself with your hands to climb some blocks of pebbles or rock, a hiking stick can be of great help whether to go up or down (risk of slipping in case of rain). Besides these disadvantages, this course is shaded and you will have more pleasant heat conditions to make the hike.

During the hike, you will see numbers in yellow, there are 6 to the top.

When you arrive at the top, you can enjoy the view of the town of Diamant.

You can also contemplate the Rock from the heights by venturing on a path on the left. It is on the right when you are facing the view of the town.

Go to the end of the path, the show is beautiful.

Retrace your steps and go this time to the path on the left (signpost facing you) and advance to the next location post. It is near a pond.

Put yourself in front of the post and go back, the path is there waiting for you. Beware of tall grass that can be irritating or pungent.

Follow the path made by other visitors’ to reach a rock.

Climb on this one, and enjoy the show. A beautiful sunset side Sea of the Caribbean.

Here is a video preview of the sunset from the summit of Morne Larcher (

To go down the Morne Larcher, I advise you to leave a little before dark to join the main path and equip you with a flashlight, preferably a headlamp, to help you with your hands during the descent. Take your time and be careful where you put your feet.
