Welcome to the municipality of the Carbet commune located in the North Caribbean of Martinique. This town benefits from its seaside location to offer you numerous nautical activities (jet ski, …) and the discoveries of marine biodiversity (fishing, dolphin outings, …). Many restaurants and bars take advantage of this seaside with a wonderful sunset at the end of the day. Each week of full moon, you can take part to  the full moon that takes place in the town. In terms of services, you will also find a gas  station, a post office, banks, a pharmacy, a covered market  for fish, and a recognized glacier located in the village next to the church.

Finally, in terms of discoveries, you can visit the Habitation Neisson and explore the surroundings until Saint-Pierre to discover the starting point of hikes, especially that of the Slave Canal “ Canal des Esclaves” (also called Canal de Beauregard).

Itinerary

To reach this beach, leaving from Fort-de-France (more than an hour’s drive), take the A1 towards the north of the island (Schoelcher, Case-Pilote). Pass several roundabouts and you are on the N2. Continue your way and pass the towns of Case-Pilote, Bellefontaine, when arriving in the commune of the Carbet, continue straight and then turn right after the gas station of the commune. You will take a road (D62) offering you after a few minutes a nice view on the bay of Carbet. During this climb, follow the signs towards the Canal de Beauregard. You will have to take a right turn at a junction (see photo below).

This hike can also be done starting in the commune of Fond Saint-Denis, with a point of departure next to the Maison Rousse (hotel and restaurant).

To get there, from the Route de la Trace take the direction of Fond-Saint-Denis.

Continue your way and stop a little before you see the departure of the hike (sign) to park on the roadside or in the entrance of the field near the trees and bushes.

You will be able to park easily as this is not a busy road. After parking head towards the starting point of the hike.

Canal des Esclaves

Tip: Think if you are doing the hike in a group to park a car at each starting point of the hike to make it easier for you to return if you do not want to go back in the other direction.

The hike of the Canal des Esclaves is a course of 4.0 kilometers with quite no altitude. It is accessible to the whole family, but avoid young children who cannot be transported by an adult or dizzy person (as you have to walk along the cliff).

Count on to 2h00 to 2h30 round trip. It can be done in both directions if you leave the commune of Fond Saint-Denis.

Facing this sign, all you have to do is to follow the path on your right. You will walk on the canal all along the hike offering splendid views on various drearies and green landscapes. This Canal was built to convey water from the river from Fond Mascret to the plantations.

This hike can be carried out from two communes, either from the Carbet or from Fond-Saint-Denis. I have chosen to do it in the Carbet. The trail consists of a canal made of stone that you must follow. This hike on cliff side offers many magnificent views of the Pitons du Carbet.

Small Piton

Continue your way along the canal where you will see River Crabs in the canal and other small fish. The edges of cliffs and vegetation (trees such as the Fromagers, balisiers, bamboos, …) offer a shady environment where it is pleasant to walk.

After three-quarters of an hour’s walk you will observe a superb waterfall on your right, descending from a dreary.

The canal was closed to the hike for several months because a part had yielded due to the storm in November 2016. It has been reopened to hikers only since May 2017. You will be able to observe the junction that has been redone.

Continue your way, be careful to pay attention to the passages or the water overflows the canal to avoid all slips. Arriving at the end of the Canal, you can either continue along the canal through a tunnel or go by the road to join upstream the starting point of the hike on Fond Saint-Denis.

You will pass under the hotel of the Maison Rousse through a tunnel whose scrap metal door has been opened.  Continue on the canal.

You have reached the starting point of the Canal side Fond-Saint-Denis. You can continue the hike by crossing the river and walking on the canal that will take you to the Inlet at the place called “La Grosse Roche”, where it is possible to refresh yourself.

Prise d’eau

Photo by Anais GALL of the water spot

For the return, take the same path or if you do the hike in a group, the idea of putting a car at each starting point can be practical.

En termes de conseil,

TIPS:

Ø Circulation in Martinique:  During the weeks you will encounter many traffic jams from 7 a.m. to 9. 30 a.m. in the industrial and commercial areas. Especially mornings driving from south (Rivière Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), but also East (Robert , N1) going North , you will find the same traffic jams every evening on the other side from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Tip, think of the way and time you want to travel in order not to lose time.

Ø Facilities: good pair of hiking shoes or tennis shoes bag with (knife, rain coat, lamp, hats or caps, sun glasses, sun cream and mosquito repellent).

Ø  Health conditions:

–           Difficulty : 5 / 10, this hike can be done by the whole family but not for small children and also not recommanded for person that are scared of heights. Be careful not to slip during the hike.

–           Try to start the hike early in the morning as the heat during the stay can represent a difficulty and requires a minimal sporting activity. This hike is most of the time under the sun.

–          Take your time and go as you wish, plan the time that you will need depending on your physical condition..

–          Important tip: always have a bottle of water per person and a snack in your bag; with the heat any hike can be dangerous especially if you are tired.

Others : you can relax or go swimming on the different beaches in the Carbet (the sunset on the beach is beautiful there). You can also visit the Neisson Habitation or go in direction of Saint Pierre to visit the science museum, the ruins and the Depaz Habitation.
