Welcome to the junction between the municipality of Fort-de-France and Fond Saint-Denis. The town of Fond Saint-Denis is located near the Pelee Mountain. An observatory (Morne des Cadets) was built there to monitor volcanic activity. This town is quite far away and is connected to the municipalities of Fort-de-France and Saint-Pierre by the Route de la Trace that has many treasures (hiking, river bathing and waterfalls). Here is one of the treasures of the municipality of Fond Saint-Denis, the Alma Reception Area.

Itinerary

To access the trail, join the A1 and then the D41 to take the exit towards Balata (N3). This road also called Balata road will take you to the heights of Martinique with many bends. You will see as you go, hydrophilic vegetation that will be more and more lush and dense around you. It will take you from the exit to the reception area of Alma at least thirty minutes. You will meet on your way the Sacred Heart or the Gardens of Balata.

When you arrive on site, you will observe the White River, cross the bridge and you will have places to park on the right side of the road.

The attached photo was taken in the other direction from the entrance to the Alma Forest Forest educational trail.

Here you are at the start of the trail, you will be able to realize a very fast course (20 to 30 minutes) that will inform you on the fauna and the forest flora or on the cycle of the water and the important role of this hydrophilic forest who surrounds you. This trail is 850 m long and accessible to the whole family

You will take paths in the middle of trees (mahoganys, mahots blue, …) and stairs.

This trail is a loop that will take you along the Rivière Blanche where you can cool off.

Go up the stairs to finish the path that will take you back to the starting point. You will find Educational tablets once again along the path.

Your educational path is over; enjoy swimming or picnicking by the river.

TIPS,

Ø Circulation in Martinique:  During the weeks you will encounter many traffic jams from 7 a.m. to 9. 30 a.m. in the industrial and commercial areas. Especially mornings driving from south (Rivière Salée, N5) to the North (Fort-de-France, A1), but also East (Robert , N1) going North , you will find the same traffic jams every evening on the other side from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Tip, think of the way and time you want to travel in order not to lose time.

Ø  Facilites : good pair of hiking shoes or tennis shoes, bag with (knife, rain coat, lamp, hats or caps, sun glasses, sun cream and mosquito repellent).

Ø  Sanitary conditions:

–         Difficulty : 2 / 10, easy hike that can be done by the all family and even with a baby carrier. The way can be slippery sometimes. The welcome area offers the possibility to swim in the river and to have lunch there (picnic).

–         Normally, always start hiking at the earliest in the morning. The daytime heat during minimal sports activity can become quite stifling. This hike is largely in the shade in the forest

–         Take your time and go as you wish, plan the time that you will need depending on your physical condition.

–        Important tip : always have a bottle of water per person and a snack in your bag.

Others : You can stop and relax by the river or to the hike of la Route de la Trace offering other hike departures (Trace des Jésuites) and a waterfall ( Saut du Gendarme)
