Welcome to the municipality of the Prêcheur, a commune located in the North Caribbean of the island. This isolated town has the particularity of having a low population and living mainly fishing. The seabed located near this town is very rich and are also very well preserved by the local population. Many buildings on this town are classified historical monuments and activities mainly nautical (diving, fishing, surfing, snorkeling) will enchant you. The Habitation Céron and the most beautiful tree of 2016 (Zamana) also resides on the commune of the Prêcheur. Finally, you will have other activities available such as the Cascade Couleuvre, the Prêcheur-Grand’Rivière hike, the climb of Mount Pelée or canyoning. This is a peaceful town that will disorient you and make you discover places that have kept all their charm of yesteryear such as the beaches of Anse Couleuvre or Anse Lévrier. It’s up to you to explore them.

Hiking the Couleuvre River will take you to one of the highest waterfalls in Martinique. The trail to the Cascade Couleuvre is accessible to all the family and is 3.8 kilometers round trip time of 1:30 to 2 hours. You will have a positive elevation on the way up with some short climbs.

To access this hike from Fort-de-France (count on more than an hour drive), take the A1 towards the north of the island (Schoelcher, Case-Pilote). Go through several roundabouts and here you are on the N2. Continue your road and pass the towns of Case-Pilote, Bellefontaine, Le Carbet then Saint-Pierre. Here you are on the D10 towards the commune of the Prêcheur. Pass the town, follow the indications to the Habitation Céron. Follow the direction of Anse Couleuvre, you will take a concrete road made of many bends and channels. Take them carefully as they can be rough enough to drive. At the end of the road, you will come to a small car park that can be quickly filled. If so, you are forced to drive around and park on the side of the road.

First tip: Leave early to arrive before 9 am so you do not have too much trouble to park. Otherwise, you will be forced to park on the side of the road by turning around on the parking lot.

From the car park, take directly on your right to see the information board of the hike to the Cascade Couleuvre.

Cascade Couleuvre

Take on your right to take a first staircase and start the hike.

The trail will plunge you into a rain forest along the Couleuvre River. You will see at the beginning of the hike many cocoa trees, remnants of the agricultural activity of Habitation Couleuvre of the time.

After about fifteen minutes walking, you will arrive on a pontoon and a first crossing of the Couleuvre River. You will have the opportunity to cross it many times on your course.

You will see many impressive trees (Zamana, Bois Rivière, …) on which you will have the chance to see  Matoutou Cliffs (endemic tarantulas) that populate this forest.

Here are the different passages in the river that you will have to cross. You may not recognize the photos during your hike because the floods of the Couleuvre River regularly modify the trails .

Placards and color codes will show you the way to the waterfall.

You will be more likely to see tarantulas at the end of the course.

You still have a few stairs and a last climb to go to see the waterfall in the distance.

Come near the reward: a swim under the waterfall. It is impressive from its height and you can easily go under, under a rain of fresh and invigorating water descending from the slopes of Mount Pelée (active volcano of Martinique).

Click on this link to have a first video preview of the waterfall on our Facebook page.

At the opposite of the waterfall you will see lithological layers of clay. You can take the opportunity to make a skin care.
